PM's Wesak Day message: Remember values cherished by all religions
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wants Malaysians to overcome disputes and misunderstandings by reminding themselves of the values that all religions cherish, while taking the route of moderation.
He said all religions taught the value of kindness and respect towards one another, regardless of race, ethnicity, creed and background.
Najib said he was able to appreciate the diversified religious celebrations in the country and observed that all religions also shared common values of humanity and moderation.
Such values should be cherished by all, he added.
"Although, occasionally, disputes and misunderstandings may threaten to dislodge the peaceful environment we live in, I sincerely believe we can overcome them by reminding ourselves of this simple value that all religions cherish and take the route of moderation," he said in his Wesak Day message uploaded in his blog here Monday.
Buddhists will be celebrating Wesak Day Tuesday.
Meanwhile, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, in his Wesak Day message, said there was no place for religious zealots and that moderation in politics must be upheld and emphasised.
"We must not allow ourselves to be entrapped in the politicisation of racial and religious issues.
"Irrespective of our religion, no one should use religion for political reasons.
"It is a recipe for disaster when race, religion and politics are put together. Malaysia cannot accept such a trend," he said.
Dr Chua said MCA did not condone extremism and Malaysians must join forces to put a stop to spoilers of unity and peace in the country.
"Wesak is the day we should reflect on the pureness of our hearts to extend a helping hand to the helpless, needy and give thanks to those who have made it possible for Malaysia to prosper.
"On this day, we should also reaffirm our commitment to peace," he said.
